Feral Cats

Feral Cats

The wild domestic cats descend from cats that rejected the domestic environment or where expelled from it.

Among its ancestors are the abandoned alley cats and those who arrived by ship to an island and stayed there or (at least in legends) those who survived shipwrecks, although in islands totally desert they would have to be couples of different sex that survived, which is difficult to believe.

On the fields, the colonies are usually conformed by the descendants of farm cats.

In urban zones, the migratory movements and the industries make the populations of wild domestic cats to increase.

The Color of Feral Cat
After several generations of freedom, and independently from the color of their ancestors, wild domestic cats usually recover the tabby patterns on their cloaks. It is a dominant feature and with the uncontrolled reproduction the other colors disappear.

The statistics made in places as far as Boston (Massachusetts, U.S.A.) and Hobart (Tasmania, Australia) show that most of the adult wild domestic cats present the tabby blotched pattern. It has been suggested that this might be that because the tabby blotched is nearer to the original feline type and that is how they easily survive.

However, in places like the center of London there exists a great number of black wild domestic cats with white stains on the chest, paws and nose, which indicates that this group, when living in a limited zone and with a high feline density, is more independent than others.
