Feline Laryngitis

Feline Laryngitis

When you hear a cat coughing and emitting shrieks, you can suspect it is laryngitis. You can assure this by a simple exam feeling the respiratory conduits with the thumb and index. You can feel in the larynx a bulge. Then you press it lightly, but with little force with both fingers. The cartilages should bend inward correctly.  In case of laryngitis, a clear access of cough is provoked this way. Treatment for this affection is more painful that dangerous and it is not easy. Another important thing is that the patient must breath only moderate temperature air and not too dry. Drifts are terrible for them. Preparations to dissolve phlegms are appropriate in these cases. Cats have to eat voluntarily; I don’t suggest forcing them to eat because there is danger of choking.

If you have a fairly calm cat, inhalation is very useful. You will hear that the owner of the cat should lock itself with the cat inside a bathroom loaded with steam. This helps the larynx, but when it comes out all bewildered and humid, the risk of cooling is high.
