Cat Mouth Cavity Inspection

Cat Mouth Cavity Inspection

Does it rub its snout with the leg? Does it salivate or has a hard time chewing? If so, you should do a mouth inspection. First you need a well-illuminated room. It is better if you can have someone else with a flashlight. All this has to be done with agility because your cat is not a circus lion that can tolerate several seconds the presence of someone down their mouth.

Depending what you prefer, either put it on a flat surface or on your lap. This last one results less exaggerated which is always an advantage. Once chosen, then hold the animal not so tight with one hand. With the other one, pull back its head holding one of the ears between your thumb and forefinger and quickly with the other one open its mouth. To do this, do not stick your fingers inside the mouth, but hold it open by pressuring the jaws. If you try to do it violently you wont obtain anything at all. The person holding the flashlight must aim the light from a distance of about half a meter. With a bit of practice, it is possible to obtain a general rapid vision. This exam must always end with caresses.

Liquid administration
Little by little, we are approaching more difficult situations. When administering liquids, we have three possibilities:

  • The ideal thing would be for liquids to have a pleasant flavor so it can sip voluntarily. This way, there would be no need to act harshly and it will be enough for you to give it to them in a bowl or plate.
  • Those liquids have a moderately acceptable flavor, but it doesn’t want to drink voluntarily. In this case, the following procedure can be applied.
  • Those liquids results disgusting. This is a difficult case. You can probably deceive the animal once or twice, but not more. If possible, give the medicine in tablets, or better, in pills.

To administer liquid, you can do some pulse exercise with a teaspoon. Open the jaws with the nose facing upwards. At this moment, a helper will come and pour the liquid with a teaspoon. Keep cats face looking up for a couple of seconds so it will have no other option than to swallow it. Another way to administer liquid, which is also more comfortable, is with a plastic syringe without the needle. Your veterinarian can give you one and if not, you can find one in any drugstore. You don’t need another person to help you with this. Grab the cat’s head with one hand; mouth can stay closed. The nose should also face upwards. Now, introduce without violence the top of the syringe laterally inside the mouth and press slowly. Nose up! You can also practice with some milk sweetened with some honey. This is also a way you can feed your cat when it has lost some appetite.
