Cat Injuries

The proverbial reputation of seven lives is based in their aptitude to survive terrifying injuries. It has a lot of truth to it; specialist are surprised over and over again to see how fast they recover and the stoicism with which they support serious injuries, even the most spoiled cats.

However, this does not count for every case. Tendency for wounds to heal completely only happens when:

  • Wound secretions can flow
  • Cats have the possibility of licking it.

I’m not talking, in such cases, of vital organ injuries that submit under their own rules. Any wound that is being treated at home, you have to try not to close so soon, that secretions can flow without obstacles and that no retention is produced. My expectations as for a set of instruments that the reader has to have for the care of wounds are not very demanding.  In modern homes, there are televisions, washing machines and some pocket calculators. Probably what you don’t have is a pair of medium sized, sharp and curled scissors. You must have some. With them, you can cut hair that surrounds the wounded area. First, you will have a global vision. Besides, you will help prevent that any blood or secretions will stick to the wound. You can do this better than anyone else. The wound treated with any talc only makes sense when cats can’t lick them. If not, the preparation will go directly to the stomach, where it will cause a discomfort, if not an intoxication. Preferably use powder that can dissolve in secretions of the wound. You can ask a veterinarian or specialist what to use. In case of extensive injuries, a veterinarian should provide the remedy. Probably will apply some stitches, straighten the edges of the wound and stretch it a little to obtain a better exit for fluids. In most cases, dangers of hemorrhage are exaggerated. Generally cats wont come up to you because it’s bleeding. Allow small wounds to bleed freely; it would be a serious mistake to use cotton to stop hemorrhage.  That of worrying aspect, which evaluation is difficult, has to be left to a doctor’s ability. You can provoke more damages than benefits using normal and compressive bandages. A general rule exists for wound treatment: if after a few days of treatment, the general condition gets worse accompanied of fever, it is necessary to take immediately the animal to a veterinarian. In such cases, almost always an accumulation of secretions is formed which has to be eliminated necessarily by a specialist.
