Cat in History, Friends and Foes

Cat in History, Friends and Foes

Near to the year of 8,000 B.C., humans began to abandon their nomad ways of life that were based in hunting and herding to establish and to dedicate themselves to the agriculture. The first settlements appeared in the Middle East. One of the many chances derived from this great transformation of the human behavior was the arrival of small wild cats to the limits of these settlements, attracted for what constituted as an abundant source of food.

At the primitive storage buildings the cereals and the drains at the outside of these settlements where full of mice and rats. In difference with the wild dogs, that could be a nuisance, cats didn’t suppose any kind of danger for the food of the humans, nor to the cattle or the people.

Proofs of Ancient Egypt
Neither in the rupestrian drawings nor on the artifacts of those primitive settlers appeared any cats.

The art of the first civilizations seems to have favored bigger mammals, be it as hunters or as preys, and sometimes also they were represented as herds of animals.

Cats don’t appear as important figures in the life of the people until the civilization of ancient Egypt, about the year 3,000 B.C., In some thousand years, in the ancient Egypt the cat pass to be from a useful destructor of harmful animals to religious icon.

It was also respected and even worshiped by the ancients Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Japanese, although the enthusiasm of these people towards cats where less than that of the Egyptians.
