Cat Identification, Collar, Tattoos and Microchip
Cat ID
If a cat gets lost or hurt and is found, it has a much better possibility of finding its family if it has some type of identification. There are many different forms of identification.
Collar
A collar with a plaque engraved with its name, address and owners phone number shows that the cat is not homeless and that it belongs to someone. It is recommendable to have a collar that can be taken off easily, but if it comes off the cat will lose its identification.
Tattoos
In some countries they prefer to use tattoos as identification, and it is placed on the inside of the ear. A tattoo is easily seen, it can’t get lost and it is completely safe.
Microchip
This is a safe and permanent method. The veterinarian implants a tiny microchip under the skin, in the back part of the cat’s neck. The chip has a unique registration code, which is registered with a data base with the details of its owner. If the cat is taken to a veterinary surgeon or a pet shelter, they’ll be able to identify its identification code. The details will appear on the computer and they will get in contact with the owner to give its pet back (If you change addresses make sure to update the details in the data base). The disadvantages of the microchip is that it is invisible and it’s very costly.
