Cat Glaucoma, Ear Mites and Hematoma
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is common in older cats, it is produced when there is an increase in the pressure of the eyeball, caused by swelling, internal bleeding or a tumor.
- Symptoms: the eye appears enlarged and cloudy.
- Treatment: this is a serious and painful disease which requires urgent veterinary treatment.
Ear Mites
The tiny mites are in most cats ears, specially kittens.
- Symptoms: a severe infection causes intense irritation and an excessive production of brown ear wax. This makes the cat scratch and shake their head persistently causing inflammation and possibly a hematoma.
- Treatment: your veterinarian will clean the ears and prescribe drops. These kill the adult mites but not the eggs, therefore the drops need to be used for twenty one days to eradicate the problem. Ear mites are very contagious, so all cats and dogs of the house need to be treated.
Hematoma
Fighting or scratching persistently because of ear mites can break the blood vessels in the ear.
- Symptoms: a large blood blister or a hematoma. If not treated, the liquid is absorbed into the ear canal and causes permanent undulation in the ear.
- Treatment: consult your veterinarian, who will drain the liquid. Control ear mites.
- Warning: There is no reason for you to poke in your cats ears with tweezers because you can cause serious and painful damage.
