Cat Flea Control, Dental Hygiene and Brushing your Cats Teeth
All cats may attract fleas when they are outside. To avoid this problem it is necessary to have an attack to keep clean, both your home as well as your cat.
Getting Rid of Parasites
A regular treatment will keep your cat free from intestinal worms. The anti- parasites come in tablets, powder, liquids, grains and pastes. The products that are most effective are found in veterinary shops. The frequency and the amount of doses depend on the type of product that is used. As a guide, the kittens from two to twelve weeks should be checked and treated for parasites every three weeks. Treat adult cats for parasites and tapeworms every three to six months. Kittens may obtain parasites from their mothers, during her pregnancy and nursing. Council with your veterinarian about good anti-parasites for pregnant cats that don’t harm kittens.
Oftentimes, cats get tapeworms by swallowing infected fleas with larva from tapeworms while they nurse, so it is vital to give it an effective control for fleas.
Dental Hygiene
Gum and teeth problems are present in eight out of ten older cats, over three years old. Just like humans, cats accumulate bacterial plaques ( a mixture of pieces of food and bacteria) over their teeth. If it is not under control, the plaque becomes solid and it forms stones or tartar. This irritates the gums, producing gingivitis, and it can even get to the point of loosing its teeth. The bacteria can also enter the blood flow and damage the kidneys and other organs.
Brushing Teeth
Brushing your cat’s teeth regularly from an early age can prevent future dental problems. Your veterinarian can supply you with soft brush or a rubber applicator and dental paste for pets (do not use dental paste for humans). You do not have to open its mouth to be able to clean the teeth; simply retrieve the gums. For cats that don’t like to be touched on their mouth you can get a gel for oral hygiene, that is given directly or mixed with food. These contain enzymes that kill bacteria responsible for the formation of plaque.
There are also chewable dental devices and dry veterinarian diets that contain fiber matters that create a brushing action over the teeth while the cat chews. Your cat will also be able to clean its teeth by giving it a piece of meat to chew on.
Dental Inspection
Regularly check your cat’s teeth and gums to see if it has signs of plaque (a yellowish or brownish cover over the teeth) or over swollen gums.
Take it to a veterinarian that will clean its teeth and take out any that are loose. A lot of cats seem rejuvenated after a dental treatment and can manage after the extraction of several teeth.
