Cat Trees and Houses

cat houseWhen working as a craftsman on cat trees and houses I came to the conclusion that wood is that best thing to use in the construction of furniture and houses for cats. While it is possible to use other materials and there are some very good materials available on the market, in my opinion nothing beats wood. It is great if you can use a good wood like cedar but even it you just use plywood the fact that it is a natural material does something for the cat house that other materials can’t touch. I have seen many different types of cat trees but the ones which I always refer to when planning to construct any kind of cat tree are the ones that I saw made out of the real trunk of a tree. What the craftsmen had done was take the actual trunk of a tree and cut it in half and then hollow out the inside which they then filled with ledges, swings, perches, scratching posts, etc… Of course the amount of time and expense necessary to complete one of these “real” cat trees is ph

enomenal and not an undertaking to be approached lightly. If you have the skill, tools, time and money necessary to tackle a project like that then of course that would be my first choice for a cat tree. However if you are a person like me of few resources, it is still possible to make very nice cat trees and houses out of normal lumber found in most hardware stores. It is important to make sure the lumber has been treated and is not so brittle that it will break easily. You also will want to chose a wood that has a nice look and smell. Believe it or not some wood if not treated properly actually has quite a strong stench to it.
